A Young Gentleman Requires Treatment For His Acute Depression, Relationship Difficulties, And For His Alcohol Dependency And Drug Addiction

Nearly eight months ago I had lunch with a thirty-nine-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences intense depression, has relationship problems, and who is dependent on drugs and alcohol. As stated by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug addiction and his acute depression that has had the most to do with his constant relationship issues.

As stated by Benjamin, he is so dejected by his relationship difficulties and by both of his medical problems that he, for all intents and purposes, has no drive to achieve much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin finished one semester of graduate school in entrepreneurship.

Benjamin's situation makes me question if he is an example of a person who can look within and see his drug abuse and drinking problems and do something healthy about these problems. Or, on the other hand, if he is an individual who has to hit the very bottom before he gets alcohol and drug addiction treatment that leads to long lasting recovery.

It may be asked how counseling would help his drug and alcohol addiction. First of all, there are a number of newly discovered doctor-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin avoid a drug and an alcohol drug relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in treatment he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the different stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to accept the fact that there is entirely nothing productive about substance abuse and careless and hazardous drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the path to shattered relationships, poor work and school performance, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, legal problems, and a premature death. Fourth, counseling for his relationship issues and his depression might help him manage these medical conditions more successfully and perhaps create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in therapy he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has exhibited.

Since Benjamin doesn't have the willpower to accomplish much of anything in his life, it is plain to see that he desperately needs some hope for a more productive life. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the therapy he needs for his intense depression and addiction and stick with his treatment routine.

Benjamin is simply too young to be overwhelmed in life. He doesn't understand this at this time in his life but if he can learn how to refrin from alcohol and drugs through drug and alcohol rehab and get the counseling he needs for his extreme depression, he can turn his life around and begin living with self-respect, passion, and direction.

Better relationships, a wonderful life, self esteem, and affirmative change are certainly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can become motivated to seek the medical rehabilitation he requires, follow through with his treatment program, live his life in a healthy and addiction-free manner, and learn how to develop a more positive attitude about his existence.
