A Ninth Grade Male Student Drinks Excessively With His Friends, Almost Dies From Alcohol Poisoning, And Learns That Learning Something In Class Can Change Your Life

Andy was a high school freshman who commonly seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had an adventurous personality and as a rule wanted to do what his older brothers were doing for fun. The primary problem with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were consequently within their legal rights to operate a car or truck and to consume alcohol.

Andy, however, had a rough time grasping the fact that as a fifteen-year-old individual he should not be drinking. In fact, on the other hand, Andy regularly drank with his high school friends after school, predominantly on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy was invited to drive around with some of his older friends. One of his pals was old enough to purchase alcohol. After purchasing some beer, wine, and wine coolers, Andy and all of his friends went to a park and drank for about three hours.

After drinking roughly five wine coolers, Andy started to feel woozy and then vomited. When he passed out on the football field, one of his buddies called 911 for help. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his buddies went to the hospital to see Andy, they were notified that Andy had been showing evidence of alcohol poisoning symptoms. Stated briefly, Andy had experienced an alcohol overdose.

After receiving alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was actually shocked to find out that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had approximately five or ten drinks. When he stated this to the attending healthcare practitioner at the hospital, nevertheless, the physician told Andy that drinking five or ten bottles of beer over a two or three hour time frame could in fact be significantly more alcohol than can be processed by the body. The healthcare professional further verbalized how excessive alcohol can cause the brain to shut down a person's respiratory system and that when this happens, an individual can cease to exist.

This was the first warning to Andy that he was drinking in a hazardous fashion and that there are costs for such activities. The physician told Andy that he was a lucky young man because he almost lost his life from alcohol poisoning the previous night.

The physician also had a word with Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol therapy for Andy. His parents were overjoyed that Andy was all right and told the physician that they would look into getting Andy alcohol treatment.

While conversing with his parents, Andy told them that there must be a special reason why he did not expire and that he felt a sense of thanksgiving that he was still alive. He also told his parents that the most ironic part about the entire drinking situation was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the previous week at school in health class.

At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was saying didn't seem to make a lot of sense to Andy. Since he almost died, however, he felt that he should have listened more intently in class and applied what he had learned to his life.

Andy notified his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to the classroom and apologize to Mr. Johnson for not demonstrating more attention to a topic that was as significant as learning about alcohol poisoning.
