A Health Teacher Teaches Her Pupils About The Relevant Issues Involved In Alcohol Addiction Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most popular parochial high school in the local community. Although she had been teaching for only four years, she had already gained a reputation as a person with a teaching methodology that motivated and encouraged the pupils in her class to think and to learn.

For example, one Tuesday morning at 9:30 she addressed her pupils and said the following: "For the next three or four days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a general standpoint and we are also going to learn about a number of the most common signs of alcoholism from a less general and more detailed point of view."

"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will unquestionably demonstrate that a drinker with a drinking problem is a person who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that a person exhibits, the greater the probability that he or she is an individual who is alcohol dependent."

Miss Jackson then told the class members that each person would be responsible for researching two alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her results to the other members in the class via a seven minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her class to go over the list and rank the top six alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After roughly ten minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and told her students that after she tallies the numbers, she will present her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson told her pupils to look over the information she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, issues, or concerns. Within a minute or two, almost every student in the class raised his or her hand. It was obvious that the students had some concerns, questions, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For instance, almost every pupil had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism authorities, that is to say, "Do you feel very sick when you quit drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told the students in her class why this answer was the most clear-cut sign of alcohol addiction. She stressed the fact that the main difference between alcoholism and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.

Essentially this means that when a person who is addicted to alcohol suddenly quits drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the individual who is alcohol dependent, the students started to understand the basic difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating that the end of class had arrived. Based on the buzz exhibited by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson realized that she had inspired and motivated her students to stop and think about a significant health issue and social problem that exists in our country.
